The Crosby® S-281 Sling Saver® is an alloy web sling shackle. It replaces a conventional shackle at the sling eye and gives the webbing a wide, radiused bearing surface instead of a round pin — which is what protects the eye and keeps the rated capacity of the sling.
Selecting one: go by the EYE width, not the body width
This is where the wrong part gets ordered. A web sling’s eye is usually tapered narrower than its body, so it will fit a hook. A 4" sling does not have a 4" eye.

Note the 2" sling: eye and body are the same width, because a 2" sling is not normally tapered. Every width above that is. Crosby states the condition directly — “For 3" and larger webbing width, tapered eye is required.” If your 3", 4" or 6" sling has an untapered eye, it will not fit the shackle this table points you to.

Ratings and standards
- 5:1 design factor. Maximum proof load is 2 times the Working Load Limit.
- Designed for Type III (eye & eye), Class 7, 2-ply web slings.
- Working Load Limits are in metric tonnes as published by Crosby — 2.95 t, 4.08 t, 5.67 t and 7.70 t. Some resellers list this family as 3.25 / 4.5 / 6.25 / 8.5 ton against the same stock numbers; those are US short tons converted from Crosby’s metric figures. The capacity is the same, the unit is not.

- Meets the minimum stock diameter, thickness and effective contact width in the Web Sling & Tie Down Association Recommended Standard Specification for Synthetic Polyester Round Slings, WSTDA-RS1.

Inspection & Safety
Before every use: visual check for cracks, corrosion, distortion, wear, and illegible markings. Annually (minimum): documented periodic inspection by a trained inspector. Remove from service at first sign of damage. Never repair rigging hardware by welding, heating, or bending.
WARNING: Improper use of rigging can cause death or serious injury. Never exceed the rated Working Load Limit. Apply derating for side-loading, elevated temperature, or chemical exposure. Final application decisions must be made by a Qualified Person per OSHA 1926.32(m).
